Great Cruelty Free Makeup and Skincare Brands Available in the UK

Beauty - cruelty free makeup and skincare

The best cruelty free makeup and skincare brands

For anyone who’s both an animal lover and a beauty lover, you might relate to the struggle of wanting to switch to using cruelty free makeup and skincare brands, but being unsure of where to start when it comes to determining if a brand is actually cruelty free or not. This is because although animal testing is banned in the European Union, it’s still required by law in China, and many of the biggest beauty brands still contribute to this practice by selling their products in China.

This fact might make you think that you’ll have to abandon many of your favourite beauty products if you do decide to go cruelty free, but that’s simply not the case! Whether you want to overhaul your entire beauty product stash, or make small steps by incorporating more cruelty free products into your routine, here are just some of the great makeup and skincare brands that don’t test their products on animals…

Lush Cosmetics

Perhaps one of the most famous cruelty free beauty brands, the fact that they don’t test their products on animals is a big part of Lush Cosmetics’ branding (and many of their products are vegan too)! However, what many may not know is that everyone’s first stop for bath bombs, bubble bars, and bath melts stock so much more than just pretty bath products. In fact, it was founded in 1995 by Mark Constantine, a trichologist and Liz Weir, a beauty therapist, and their products range from face cleansers and hair treatments, to makeup and perfume.

Lush Cosmetics products to try: Ultrabland Cleanser, It’s Raining Men Shower Gel, Mask of Magnaminty Face and Body Mask, Vanishing Cream Moisturiser, Dream Cream Body Lotion.

Kat Von D Beauty

Founded by American tattoo artist, model and television personality, Kat Von D (of Miami Ink and LA Ink fame), this self-titled makeup range prides itself on being cruelty free, as well as 100% vegan. Much like Kat herself, it’s also known for its more ‘alternative’ style, and Kat Von D Beauty should be your first port of call if you’re looking for bright coloured lipsticks, attention-grabbing highlighters, and something different from the classic neutral eyeshadow palette.

Kat Von D Beauty products to try: Lock-It Foundation, Lock-It Setting Powder, Lolita Eyeshadow and Blush, Everlasting Liquid Lipstick, Tattoo Liner Liquid Eyeliner.

Barry M

A great budget friendly option if you want to make the switch to cruelty free makeup, most of us have fond memories of buying every shade of Barry M’s wonderfully glittery Dazzle Dusts. We are glad to report that these are still available, and the brand now also offers a range of awesome face and eyeshadow palettes, mascaras, liquid lipsticks and base products that are just as good quality as those from higher end brands. Plus, their nail polishes have serious staying power.

Barry M products to try: Illuminating Highlighter Palette, Liquid Chrome Nail Paint, Matte Me Up Lip Kits, Blusher Quad Palette, Liquid Eye Liner.

Charlotte Tilbury

With their stunning rose gold, pink and burgundy art-deco inspired packaging, Charlotte Tilbury’s products scream ‘luxury’ and ‘high quality’. Fortunately, in the case of this ultra glamourous skincare and makeup brand, for once it is right to judge a book by it’s cover! With founder, Charlotte Tilbury having been a makeup artist for many years, she’s made up many of the world’s most famous and beautiful faces (including Kate Moss, Rihanna, and Penelope Cruz), so she knows what she’s doing when it comes to creating great products.

Charlotte Tilbury products to try: Light Wonder Liquid Foundation, Matte Revolution Lipstick, Filmstar Bronze and Glow Contour Palette (Fair or Dark), The Dolce Vita Luxury Palette, Charlotte’s Magic Cream.

Liz Earle

Founded by the beauty writer and TV presenter, LIz Earle in the year 1995, Liz Earle Naturally Active Skincare is one of the most popular UK skincare brands. Famous for its natural ingredients and the award winning Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser (which has inspired many other brands to make their own version of the product), Liz Earle has now extended its range beyond skincare to makeup, haircare, body care, and fragrance.

Liz Earle products to try: Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser, Superskin Eye Cream, Instant Boost Skin TonicBotanical Shine Shampoo, Superskin Dry Oil for Body.

5 Skincare Tips For Better Skin This Winter

Winter skincare routine

Colder temperatures, harsh winds, and the simple fact that we have to spend the majority of our time indoors with the heating on; there are many reasons that winter can have a toll on our skin.

Whether you have dry skin, oily skin or a combination of the two, each of these factors will have it begging for some extra hydration. Fortunately, there’s a few simple changes you can make to your skincare routine to restore your skin to its former glory!

So, with that in mind, here are our top 5 skincare tips for better skin this winter…

1. Pick a suitable moisturiser for your skin type

If your skin is dry all-year-round and you want to amp up your hydration in winter, opt for a cream moisturiser that has a thicker consistency and contains emollients (such as shea and cocoa butter), as well as squalene, urea, and/or hyaluronic acid (more on this later). Two of our favourites are the Benefit Total Moisture Facial Cream and L’Occitane Ultra Rich Face Cream.

If your skin is oily or combination, however, using a thick moisturiser is just going to clog your pores (especially if you’re acne-prone)! Instead, choose hydrating formulas with a gel-texture; the Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief and Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Moisturiser are both great!

2. Add a hyaluronic acid serum

All skin types can become dehydrated when the colder weather hits, and hyaluronic acid is one of the best ingredients for dehydrated skin as it will help your skin to lock-in water from whichever products you layer on top of it. Additionally, as serums are able to penetrate deeper into the skin than moisturisers, you should be adding a hyaluronic acid serum into your routine.

Both the Glossier Super Bounce Hyaluronic Acid Serum, and Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II are popular choices, but The Ordinary’s Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 is also an affective and affordable option.

3. Exfoliate your skin often (but not too much)

If your skin is dry and flaking, then you should start regularly exfoliating to remove the build-up of dead skin cells. This not only makes your skin feel smoother (leading to better makeup application), but it will also help your skincare to absorb better and work more effectively. However, be careful not to overdo it; overexfoliation will just irritate your skin and make it drier.

As a general rule, chemical exfoliators (such as the Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Night Pads Extreme) can be used 2-3 times a week. However, a scrubby physical exfoliator (such as the Kiehl’s Pineapple Papaya Facial Scrub) should be used just once or twice a week.

4. Don’t be afraid of face oils

Because dry skin naturally lacks oil (which is why it’s so parched), face oils are a great addition to your skincare routine if you do have this skin type. However, you don’t need to be scared of oils if your skin is combination or on the oilier side; using an oil can actually balance oil production and stop you producing too much of it!

For oily and combination skin, we recommend applying face oils with a lighter consistency at night, such as the Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil or Caudalie VineActiv Overnight Detox Oil. For dry or dehydrated skin, we recommend the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate or Clarins Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil.

5. Use a hydrating overnight face mask

Is your regular night time moisturiser no longer cutting the mustard now that the weather’s colder? Don’t change it; just layer a hydrating overnight face mask over the top to lock in extra moisture. In fact, these are particularly great as they tend to sink in quickly, and they’ll pack a bigger punch than a face mask that you use for just 10-15 minutes before rinsing it off.

Our top picks include the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask, Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Hydrating Overnight Masque, and the Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask.

Ideas To Make White Spaces Feel Cosier

White interior wall

An all-white paint job can make a room feel much more spacious, but can often feel quite cold and sterile. Thankfully, there are a few ways you can make your home decor feel more homely without having to repaint the whole damn place!

Greenery

A super easy way to get some colour into the room is by placing some beautiful greens around the place. Whether you choose to have some leaves draping down delicately over a shelf, or make a feature with a 3ft cactus in a beautiful planter, they’re guaranteed to add a lil’ something to your space immediately.

Snake plants are a great plant for beginners as they’re nearly impossible to kill, even for the inept like us!

Get the look with this beautiful mid-century West Elm planter!

We also love this DIY trellis idea, which transforms a blank white wall into something much more eye-catching!

Artwork

A wonderful way to update your living space is to add some artwork and frames into the mix. Framing your most loved family photographs or favourite posters is a great way to add personality to your space. Gallery walls are an eyecatching feature and you can have so much fun creating them! Get creative! Different sized frames in mixed colours can look fab!

Society6, Rifle Paper Co and Etsy have are always winners in the art game.

Cushions and throws

It’s hardly news that cushions and blankets can make all the difference to making a room feel cosy.                                                                  Using different colours and textures can transform an all-white room and take some of that harshness away. Experiment with shapes and sizes and don’t be afraid to mix things up!

Rugs

We’re a fan of anything that gives our freezing little feet a bit of extra warmth, and it just so happens that rugs are also a brilliant way to bring some colour and pattern into a room! There are so many options out there to choose from, so it’s worth spending your time looking  for a good quality rug that’ll last you a while.

Here’s our round up of all the coloured, patterned goodness you’ll need:
